Opening the Discussion: Food System Risks Amid Global Warming and Economic Volatility
The panel noted that climate change and economic volatility are placing pressure on food production costs and overall food security. Dr Pairoj Saonuam, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), pointed out that developing the food system requires considering nutritional quality, access to healthy food and environmental impacts simultaneously, while proposing an increased proportion of plant-based foods in consumption to reduce long-term environmental impacts.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr Witsanu Attavanich from Kasetsart University observed that climate risks and geopolitical volatility will affect energy and raw material costs in the agricultural sector, which in turn impacts food prices and overall food security. He noted that addressing these challenges requires multi-sector collaboration while taking into account producers' constraints and access to technology.
Egg Farms Adapting to Cage-Free Systems
Sathit Kruarattikan, Managing Partner of Sanguan Farm Limited Partnership, shared his experience in cage-free egg farming, explaining that it requires an understanding of the natural behaviour of hens, starting from training chicks to become familiar with perches and nesting boxes from an early age so they can adapt more easily to the new farming system. This experience reflects that improving animal welfare is not merely about the farming format, but also requires deeper knowledge and more detailed farm management.
Hotel Businesses Driving ESG Through Procurement Policies
Kanokwan Chamchoi, Director of Sustainability at Chatrium Hospitality Group, spoke about the Think First, Think Earth concept, which prioritises environmental impact before making decisions at every stage of the business, from resource management to ingredient procurement. Transitioning to cage-free eggs is one of the approaches that expands the scope of sustainability to encompass animal welfare.
Chawakorn Chanathanyathamrong, Director of ESG and Corporate Sustainability at ONYX Hospitality Group, added that changing procurement policies requires assessing practical feasibility across price, volume, quality, food safety and supplier readiness in tandem. Both agreed that executive commitment and working closely with business partners are key factors in making the transition a reality.
Saneekan Rosamontri, Director of Sinergia Animal Thailand, stated that working with large businesses is a vital approach to scaling up animal welfare across the entire supply chain, because when hotels and operators seriously implement cage-free egg procurement policies, cage-free farming will become the new industry standard more quickly.
This news is of interest to hotel executives and procurement teams, sustainability meeting and event organisers, as well as livestock farm operators monitoring the direction of animal welfare standards in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
