Grab expands Suvarnabhumi pick-up area to 12 lanes, PIN system cuts wait times by 40%
Grab Thailand has expanded its Suvarnabhumi Airport pick-up area to 12 lanes and introduced a PIN system and Airport Pickup pre-booking service ahead of the high season.
Grab Thailand has reconfigured its passenger pick-up area at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Terminal 1st floor, Gate 4, expanding it to 12 lanes and introducing two new features: a PIN system and an Airport Pickup service. The move is aimed at handling the rise in tourist numbers expected in the fourth quarter, the year's high season, with the company noting that airport ride bookings during this period run around 35 to 40% higher than usual.
The Numbers Behind the Expansion
Airports of Thailand (AOT) expects Suvarnabhumi Airport to handle as many as 67.7 million passengers in 2026, making year-end preparations a key priority. Grab, which is AOT's official ride-hailing platform, has therefore increased the number of lanes at the pick-up point.
Ms Arisa Lorthongpaisal, Assistant Managing Director for Mobility Business and Driver Management at Grab Thailand, said the PIN system has now been trialled for one month, resulting in passengers waiting up to 40% less for their rides, with 98% of users giving it a five-star satisfaction rating.
How the PIN System Works
The system sequences and matches passengers with drivers who are ready to take jobs at the airport, reducing waiting times and congestion at the pick-up point. Users simply select the Grab Pick-up Point option when booking a ride at the airport.
After confirming the booking, the system does not immediately assign a specific car or driver. Instead, it issues a 4-digit PIN code and indicates the point where the passenger should wait. On arrival at that point, passengers give the code to the waiting driver on a first-come, first-served basis and can board immediately. Staff are on hand 24 hours a day to assist throughout the process, from booking and queuing to boarding.
Airport Pickup: Advance Booking Based on Actual Flight Times
The service is already available at Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai airports, and will be introduced for passengers arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport in the final quarter of the year. Users enter their incoming flight number and then select a pick-up time either recommended by the system or set manually.
The key feature is real-time flight status tracking: if a flight is delayed, the pick-up time adjusts accordingly. Grab guarantees an on-time pick-up, with drivers waiting at the pick-up point for up to 15 minutes, while users can cancel their booking up to one hour before the scheduled pick-up time.
