Thailand Readies for 2026 IMF-World Bank Meetings, a Major MICE Boost in 35 Years

Thailand has announced it is ready to strengthen its economic structure ahead of hosting the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings of the Board of Governors, to be held from 12 to 18 October 2026. Dr Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, revealed the preparations at the Bangkok Business Summit 2026, organised by the joint private-sector committee of three institutions in cooperation with the World Bank, on 3 September 2026. The meetings are a significant opportunity, the first in 35 years, with more than 15,000 economic leaders from 191 countries around the world travelling to Thailand to take part.

Global Meetings Give Thai MICE Its Biggest Boost in 35 Years

Dr Ekniti said Thailand is ready to use the opportunity of hosting the meetings as a bridge to bring cooperation networks, investment and sustainable development into the country and the ASEAN region. This falls under the theme Entering New Horizons, which aims to move Thailand to high-income status by 2037. The private sector will lead income generation through seven industries of the future: smart agriculture, food processing, smart electronics and digital, modern automotive, medical and wellness services, high-value tourism, and new-era wholesale and retail trade. The public sector will set strategy, remove legal obstacles and accelerate investment, under strict fiscal discipline.

Three-Level Strategy to Turn the Global Stage into National Opportunity

Dr Ekniti has set out a three-level approach. At the global level, the outcomes of the meetings will be used to link Thailand's and ASEAN's economic agenda with knowledge, capital and partner networks worldwide. The regional level focuses on government-to-government cooperation to connect rules and infrastructure, as well as business-to-business cooperation to connect manufacturers and suppliers. At the national level, the Joint Public-Private Consultative Committee (JPPCC) will be the main mechanism driving investment, new economic engines and human development, so that economic proposals can be put into practice and their results measured.

Dr Ekniti said that in a world facing geopolitical crises and economic warfare, what the region needs most are Trusted Connectors. He sees hosting the meetings not merely as a show of infrastructure readiness, but as a key turning point that will establish Thailand as a hub for finance, investment and sustainable development in ASEAN.

Bank of Thailand Highlights Four Pillars to Reinforce Economic Stability

Vitai Ratanakorn, Governor of the Bank of Thailand, said Thailand will present its vision under the theme Thailand's New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience, through four pillars: the digital and artificial intelligence transition for inclusive and resilient growth; expanding the role of middle-income countries in a highly fragmented world; building a new financial architecture to support climate change; and demographic change towards a longevity economy.

On public digital infrastructure, the Bank of Thailand will showcase the success of the PromptPay system, which supports more than 83 million registered accounts, and the Paotang application, which has more than 40 million users. Both are foundations for inclusive access to financial services.

This news is relevant to meeting and event organisers who need to plan for large numbers of business travellers in October 2026, to hotel and venue professionals who may benefit from increased demand for rooms and meeting space, and to investors and business people following the direction of the Thai and ASEAN economies.
