Phra Nakhon District Tightens Khao San Nightlife Checks, Orders OK Bar Shut

Phra Nakhon district continues inspecting Khao San Road venues after OK Bar defied a closure order and opened beyond permitted hours, with legal action now being prepared.

Phra Nakhon District Tightens Khao San Nightlife Checks, Orders OK Bar Shut

Phra Nakhon district in Bangkok is continuing its inspections of entertainment venues in the Khao San Road area, after the Department of Provincial Administration's DOPA S.W.A.T. special operations unit, under the Ministry of Interior, raided OK Bar and found it operating beyond permitted hours, with patrons under the age of 20 using the venue. Mr Parinya Chanbua, Director of Phra Nakhon District, disclosed the latest progress on the legal case and the inspection measures in the area.

Timeline of the OK Bar Inspections

Phra Nakhon district officials first inspected OK Bar on 15 July 2026 and found that it was presenting live music performances without a licence from the local authority, and that the fire prevention system inside the venue posed a safety risk to customers and staff. Officials therefore issued an inspection notice recommending that the venue make improvements and suspend operations until it obtained a licence.

When officials conducted a follow-up inspection on 3 August 2026, they found that the venue was still presenting live music without a licence, as before. The local authority therefore issued an order under Section 45 of the Public Health Act 1992, dated 4 August 2026, requiring the venue to suspend operations until it made improvements. However, the operator continued to defy the order and kept the venue open, so the district compiled evidence to pursue legal action.

Monthly Inspections Covering Multiple Laws

In addition to the OK Bar case, the Phra Nakhon District Office also carries out a monthly inspection plan covering fire prevention and suppression measures at entertainment venues and similar establishments throughout the Khao San Road area. The inspections are conducted jointly with Chanasongkram Police Station and Phu Khao Thong Fire and Rescue Station, and cover the Public Health Act 1992, the Entertainment Places Act 1966, the Building Control Act 1979, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act 2008 and the Tobacco Products Control Act 2017.

Inspection of the building housing OK Bar also found that the construction permit had been obtained in 2002 for residential use. Using the building to operate an entertainment venue therefore falls under improper use of a building according to the Building Control Act 1979, and the district is in the process of compiling evidence for further action. In general cases, if minor deficiencies are found, officials will issue a notice recommending improvements within a set period, but if a serious risk to customers is found, operations will be ordered to stop immediately.

Municipal officers, together with police, also regularly patrol Khao San Road and the surrounding area, to be ready to respond to incidents and to build confidence in safety among tourists visiting the area.

This is relevant to entertainment venue operators and hotel industry workers in the Khao San Road area who need to keep track of safety standards and proper licensing, as well as to tourists and event organisers planning activities in the area, in choosing establishments that meet standards and are safe.
