China Eastern Airlines displayed robots, AI-powered robotic arms and digital systems at the CATA aviation exhibition in Beijing, alongside updates on its C919 fleet.

China Eastern Airlines Showcases Robots and AI Passenger Services at CATA Beijing

China's China Eastern Airlines showcased self-developed digital technology and intelligent systems at the 4th CATA Civil Aviation Exhibition, organised by the China Air Transport Association, in Beijing in late September 2026. The display covered flight operations support, passenger services, aircraft maintenance and air cargo, presented through physical prototypes, models, multimedia and interactive demonstrations at the booth.

Robots and AI Robotic Arms Assist Passenger Services

In the in-flight catering zone, the airline displayed a flexible AI-powered robotic arm with an adaptive gripper capable of precisely picking up and arranging food items of various shapes, helping to automate the meal preparation process for passengers. In the passenger service zone, the airline exhibited service robots, baggage-handling robots and a four-legged robot for guiding passengers to connecting flights, all self-developed and equipped with systems that work alongside large AI models.

The airline also demonstrated an AI-powered network management platform that allowed visitors to track the real-time positions of its wide-body aircraft worldwide, as well as the satellites used to provide in-flight internet connectivity. Since July 2026, China Eastern Airlines has offered free Wi-Fi on all its wide-body aircraft flights, making it one of the first major airlines in the world to provide this service as standard for all passengers. Also on display were smart equipment for fresh food cold-chain logistics, driverless baggage tractors, modular aircraft hangars and a digital passenger terminal.

C919 Fleet Continues Commercial Operations

The operation of China Eastern Airlines' C919 fleet also attracted strong interest at the exhibition. The airline currently operates 17 aircraft of this type across 23 major routes connecting 14 cities, having flown more than 30,000 commercial flights and carried a cumulative total of more than 4 million passengers. At the opening ceremony, the airline's key technology project for large-scale C919 operations was awarded second prize in the 2025 Civil Aviation Science and Technology Awards.

In terms of its overall route network, China Eastern Airlines serves 945 destinations in 145 countries and regions worldwide, with a modern fleet of more than 850 aircraft and the capacity to carry up to 150 million passengers per year.
