China Eastern Airlines Highlights AI Innovation to Elevate Aviation at CATA Exhibition

China Eastern Airlines showcases its future vision at the CATA exhibition, highlighting AI technology and inflight Wi-Fi services.

China Eastern Airlines Highlights AI Innovation to Elevate Aviation at CATA Exhibition

China Eastern Airlines presented its advancements in digital technology and intelligent systems at the 4th CATA Aviation Exhibition in Beijing in late September 2026. This exhibition focused on the comprehensive application of technology in the civil aviation industry, covering everything from operational support, passenger services, and maintenance to air cargo transport.

AI Innovations Elevate Passenger Services and Inflight Catering

Within the China Eastern Airlines booth, numerous cutting-edge technologies were displayed, allowing visitors to interact with real equipment. One of the highlights was an AI-driven flexible robotic arm system for handling inflight catering. This equipment features an adaptive gripper capable of precisely picking up and placing food items of various shapes. This technology helps automate and accelerate the food preparation process for inflight services. Additionally, the passenger service zone saw the debut of multiple robot types, including service robots, baggage handling robots, and a four-legged robot for guiding transit passengers, all of which operate through large artificial intelligence models.

Data connectivity between the ground and aircraft is another key objective in developing a digital ecosystem. The airline demonstrated an AI network management platform that allows users to track the locations of wide-body aircraft globally in real-time, as well as displaying satellite data used for internet connectivity. Notably, China Eastern Airlines has been offering free Wi-Fi on all wide-body aircraft flights since July 2026, making it one of the major global airlines providing internet service as a standard for all passengers.

Growth of the C919 Fleet and Intelligent Operating Systems

Beyond passenger service AI systems, technologies for other operations aimed at elevating the aviation industry were also exhibited. These innovations encompassed intelligent equipment for temperature-controlled fresh food logistics management, driverless baggage tractors, prefabricated aircraft hangars, and a digital passenger terminal system. These reflect a commitment to adopting technology to increase efficiency and safety across all operational stages.

The operational performance of the C919 fleet was another success that garnered overwhelming attention from attendees. The airline currently has 17 aircraft of this model, operating on 23 routes and connecting 14 cities, having already served over 30000 commercial flights and accommodating more than 4 million passengers. The airline's C919 fleet operation project also won the second prize for civil aviation science and technology in the year 2025.
